Former boxing world champion receives devastating cancer diagnosis
by OLIVER SALT · Mail OnlineFormer three-time boxing world champion Israel Vazquez is facing the fight of his life after receiving a heartbreaking cancer diagnosis.
Vazquez, who is best known for his famous series of fights against fellow Mexican Rafael Marquez, held multiple world titles in the super-bantamweight division.
'Magnifico' eventually brought the curtain down on his iconic career after a fourth and final showdown with Marquez in May 2010, bowing out with a record of 44 wins (32 KOs) and five losses from his 49 professional contests.
Over 14 years on from his last bout, Vazquez's world has been rocked by a cancer diagnosis which has left him fighting for his life.
The World Boxing Council revealed the devastating news this week and shared a GoFundMe page set up to support their former champion in his hour of need.
'Our beloved champion has received a devastating cancer diagnosis,' the GoFundMe page reads. 'The WBC is at his side, attempting to bring in his family from Mexico and making sure he gets the care he deserves. But he needs your love and support, too.
'Show this humble and courageous warrior what he means to you. With a dollar, a prayer and a note to his family.
'One of the most compelling and compassionate boxers of all times needs your help. There's no time to waste. Stand in his corner, now!'
Vazquez won the WBC super-bantamweight title on two occasions, after first clinching it when he stopped Óscar Larios back in December 2005.
After losing it to Marquez 18 months later, he got the better of his old foe in the rematch to win the championship straight back.
The Mexico City-born fighter then retained it in their trilogy bout seven months later.
