Irish weather: Storm Ashley orange warning as Met Eireann warns of flooding & damage to structures

The storm may cause coastal flooding, with southwest gale force winds of up to 130km/h that may also cause power outages and damage to weakened structures as well as tough travel conditions

Met Eireann has released orange and yellow weather warnings as Storm Ashley is due to cause a number of adverse weather impacts.

Storm Ashley is forecast to bring strong winds, which, coupled with high spring tides, may cause coastal flooding, with southwest gale force winds of up to 130km/h that may also cause power outages and damage to weakened structures.

Dublin Airport operator daa said a "small number" of flights have been cancelled due to weather conditions.

Media Relations Manager Graeme McQueen told RTE: "As always, passengers seeking updates regarding a specific flight should contact their airline directly.

"Passengers should take extra care on their travels to and from Dublin Airport today."

Clare, Kerry, Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim are under an orange weather warning from 10am Sunday until 8pm on Sunday.

The national forecaster said: "Storm Ashley will bring very strong to gale force and gusty south to southwest winds, coupled with high spring tides."

The impacts may include:

• Coastal flooding
• Large coastal waves
• Loose objects displaced
• Fallen trees
• Very difficult travelling conditions, dangerous conditions at sea
• Damage to power lines, power outages
• Damage to already weakened structures

A status yellow wind warning is also in place for all of Ireland.

Storm Ashley will bring strong and gusty south to southwest winds, coupled with high spring tides, says Met Eireann. Possibibe impacts include:

• Some fallen trees, branches
• Difficult travelling conditions
• Debris, loose objects displaced

This warning is in place for 24 hours, ending tonight, Sunday, at midnight.

In Northern Ireland, there is an orange w ind warning for Antrim, Fermanagh, Tyrone, and Derry.

There is also a yellow wind warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Derry.

The UK Met Office said: "Storm Ashley will bring a spell of strong winds, which could cause disruption on Sunday."

The warning is valid until midnight tonight.
