Google opens up Gemini Nano for all Android apps

In the latest announcement, the company mentions that it is opening doors to Gemini Nano for all Android apps. For the uninitiated, the Gemini Nano is an impressive AI model that runs locally on your device to complete tasks like generating text summaries, image descriptions, etc. The main highlight of this AI model is that it doesn’t require any internet connection.

Google expands Gemini Nano availability for all Android apps

A few new devices like the Google Pixel 9 series and the Galaxy S24 series already support Gemini Nano. Thanks to this support, Gemini Nano could run AI features in different apps including the Pixel Recorder and the Google Messages. Now that Google is expanding the availability of Gemini Nano, all third-party Android apps will benefit from it.

Starting today, Google is allowing all Android app developers to use the AI Edge SDK tool to experiment with Gemini Nano. Worth noting that access to this tool was earlier exclusive under a closed early access program. However, it is now available for all developers working on Google Pixel 9 series phones. Google in its blog post adds that it will soon expand support for more devices.

At present, Google only allows developers to experiment with text-to-text prompts. However, the company has assured adding support for more modalities like images and more, down the line.

Google also allows developers to customize how they want to use Gemini Nano with the AI Edge SDK tool. This should help developers manage how AI processes raw data.
