The Samsung Galaxy S24 FE gets 3 key upgrades, including one big one
Longevity is the name of the game
by Chris Martin · Tech AdvisorSamsung has announced the Galaxy S24 FE as its latest mid-range phone and while the handset looks rather familiar, it gets a few upgrades in different areas including one big one.
The Galaxy S24 FE (fan edition) is Samsung’s typical late-in-the-year addition to the flagship range, offering some traits of the S24 but for a mid-range price. Samsung calls it “A premium experience that makes full Galaxy AI capabilities attainable for more users.”
Let’s take a look at the upgrades for this year’s model compared to the Galaxy S23 FE.
Software support
Let’s start with the biggest and most important change. Samsung has decided to give the S24 FE the same 7-year software support as the other S24 phones (and the Galaxy Tab S10 range also announced today).
It means it’s market-leading (along with Google) and the promise includes operating system upgrades as well as security upgrades.
With the S23 FE already a year into its four-year promise for OS updates, the S24 FE is going to last a long longer.
I’ll tackle the AI side of things later.
Bigger battery
We all want longer battery life from our phones and Samsung has done that with the S24 FE in theory.
It has a 4700mAh battery compared to the 4500mAh cell in the S23 FE. It’s not a huge jump and I think there should be room for a 5000mAh capacity in a phone this size but more is more.
Combined with the new Exynos 2400e, albeit not a big upgrade, the S24 FE should last longer.
Bigger screen
The final big change to mention is that the screen size has been increased from 6.4- to 6.7-inch giving you more real estate.
It’s still a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and Full HD+ resolution so it’s really just the size that matters here.
Much of muchness
This means the phone is relatively unchanged otherwise with the same set of cameras (50Mp main, 8Mp telephoto, 12Mp ultrawide at the back), the same 25W charging speed along with other specs like 8GB of RAM and two storage sizes at 128- or 256GB.
It comes in Blue, Graphite, Grey, Mint, and Yellow colourways.
Although Samsung touts the S24 FE as bringing Galaxy AI to the masses, the S23 FE is already listed as a phone which has these benefits on the official page.
With the phone going on sale 4 October starting at £649 in the UK it might be something of a hard sell.
In fact, I’ve rounded up four great alternatives including the Xiaomi 14T Pro which was also announced today at £649.
