Drivers have been urged to pick up some lemons to make their car experience better this winter. Spider season is in full swing across the UK, with millions of arachnids making their presence felt.

As the mating season hits its peak, not only are homes being invaded by these eight-legged creatures, but motorists are also being warned to watch out for spiders that may have hitched a ride in their cars. The answer, though, costs just 30p from Tesco.

The warning comes after a TikTok video went viral, racking up 2 million views, showing a driver spotting a spider in her car while driving. In a panic, she jumped out of the moving vehicle and sought assistance from a police car nearby.

The user, known as @summerstangerx on TikTok, told her followers that the officers helped remove the spider and placed it at the roadside. One viewer responded: "I see no overreaction."

Another said: "You're giving me so much anxiety driving.", reports the Daily Record.

A third advised: "You need to keep your hands on the wheel."

Amidst this spider frenzy, motoring experts from Nationwide Vehicle Contracts have shared tips on how to reduce the chances of spiders getting into cars during this period. They also highlighted the potential £2,500 fine drivers could face if their reaction to an eight-legged passenger causes them to drive dangerously.

They commented: "Spiders can be a real nuisance for drivers, particularly those with serious phobias. Nonetheless, it's crucial to maintain safety on the roads for both yourself and others when behind the wheel."

"Drivers can be fined up to £2,500 for reckless driving and up to nine penalty points, so it is paramount for drivers not to overreact and not to allow spiders (or any other insects) to impact their safety on the roads."

As we head into September, here are three savvy tips to keep those pesky spiders out of your vehicle:.

1. Keep it snack-free.

A key tip for motorists avoid leaving snacks in your car that could attract creepy crawlies seeking a feast. A tidier car lessens the chances of spider passengers hitching a ride, especially if food and drink are properly sealed and not left lying around.

2. Check your car regularly.

Making a point to check your vehicle for critters will save you from unwanted eight-legged surprises. Spiders often hide beneath seats or child seats and tuck away near seatbelts, so it's worth giving these spots a regular once-over.

3. Bring out the citrus.

Spiders detest the smell of citrus, making it an effective deterrent. Pop a citrus air freshener in your car or dab lemon peels around windows and doors to keep your vehicle a spider-free zone.
