Households who are struggling to pay their energy bills have been urged to ask their suppliers for help. Customers on low incomes may be able to get discounts from their energy companies.

Consumer expert Martin Lewis insisted it was "always worth asking" as it was possible companies would reduce bills for those struggling to make ends meet. Martin shared one example on social media of an Octopus Energy customer who was able to cut costs.

The Money Saving Expert presenter praised Octopus for helping the customer and suggested others should check what was available if they were worried about bills. He reposted the tweet on X which said: "Martin, I contacted Octopus and said I was struggling on a low income.

"They asked me to complete a budget, which I did, and they have cancelled my standing charge for three months. Always worth asking if you're struggling. Thumbs up to Octopus."

Martin reposted the message to his three million followers on X as part of his regular money-saving advice. It comes after energy bills rose on October 1 by an average of £179 a year.
