Foxtron Model D revealed – 7-seat MPV; 800V system; up to 660 km WLTP EV range, pneumatic suspension

Foxconn (aka Hon Hai Technology), the company that manufactures iPhones for Apple, has revealed two reference electric vehicles (EV) at its fifth annual Hon Hai Tech Day (HHTD). The new EVs are parked under the Foxtron (Foxtron Vehicle Technologies) banner, which is a joint venture between Foxconn and Yulon Motor.

First up, there’s the Model D, which the company refers to as a LMUV (lifestyle multipurpose utility vehicle) that combines the advantages of an SUV and MPV. Appearing more like the latter, the Model D is a big vehicle measuring 5,195 mm long, 1,995 mm wide, 1,785 mm tall and with a wheelbase spanning 3,200 mm.

Designed by Pininfarina, the Model D boasts a highly angular shape with S-ducts and air curtains that are designed to reduce wind resistance and bring the drag coefficient down to 0.23. While it may look production-ready, there are still some concept-like elements such as the absence of headlamps at the front, with only a full-width light bar present.

On the inside, it’s clear that the Model D will be aimed at buyers looking for a premium people mover. The rear sliding doors open to reveal a pair of executive seats that look like right in business class by being able to fold almost completely flat, accompanied by individual touchscreen displays that can be removed if required.

At the front, a widescreen touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard extends towards the front passenger, while the driver gets a smaller digital instrument cluster. As for the third row, it is pretty rudimentary by comparison with just a full bench that doesn’t appear to come with much luxuries.

Foxconn didn’t provide too much information about the powertrain, but it is known that the platform was developed by ZF Chassis Modules, which the company acquired a 50% stake last year. The Model D will use an 800V electrical architecture and is estimated to be capable of up to 660 km of range following the WLTP standard, or 800 km NEDC.

Reports indicate it will have a battery capacity of around 110 kWh and the dual-motor variant packs as much as 650 PS (641 hp or 478 kW). The company did confirm that the Model D will get an pneumatic suspension system that allows the height to be adjusted by 15 mm to 25 mm.

Joining the Model D is the Model U, a midi-sized electric bus that is said to have an estimated range of 275 km and will seat 21 passengers. There’s also the Model C, a car that is already on sale in Taiwan under the name Luxgen n7. This can be had with five or seven seats, a 60-kWh battery (up to 505 km NEDC) and a rear electric motor, with mass production slated to begin by the end of 2025. The company also previously presented the Model B crossover and Model E sedan.
