A setting spray is an easily overlooked item in your makeup routine, but it might be time to change that. As the last step in your regime, it is designed to lock in your look, ensuring it stays on for the rest of the day while preventing smudging or creasing.

A pro tip, is to apply your setting spray as the first step in your makeup routine too. This will help to lock in your skincare and work as an extra grip for your products. You can also use it in between steps to help foundation, concealer, and other creamy products blend better.

Now that we've established how crucial a setting spray can be, we decided to put some of the top sellers to the test. The industry is brimming with options, so we picked four cult favourites to see how they fared.

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray - currently on offer for £22.40 at Look Fantastic

After trying this setting spray, we actually understand why it's so famous. The All Nighter really has one purpose, and that's to keep your makeup on for as long as possible.

After forgetting about it for a few years, I gave it another go when I needed my makeup through a full day and night of plans. My makeup looked exactly the same 12 plus hours later, and I couldn't believe it.

This one promises up to 16 hours of wear and it definitely delivered. Right now it's on offer at Look Fantastic for £22.40, but you can also get it for £22.80 at Amazon, and you can get a travel size for £13.17 at Boots.

MAC Fix+ Original - Refreshing Setting Mist - currently on offer for £23.20 at Debenhams

This setting spray is the 'ultimate multi tasker' and can be used for so many different purposes. Not only does it make your makeup stay on, but it also hydrates, primes, and refreshes with a formula of green tea, chamomile and cucumber extracts.

If I'm in a rush, I'll use this on top of my moisturiser to act as a primer, and will even use it throughout the day if my skin is feeling a little bit dry. This is one of MAC's most iconic products and it's clear why when you use it.

This one promises up to 12 hours of wear and I'd say it's the best option for someone with dry skin. Debenhams has a 100ml for £23.20 right now, and Sephora is currently selling a 30ml for £16.

Revolution Superdewy Misting Spray - £8.79

It smells amazing(Image: LOOKFANTASTIC)

I absolutely love this setting spray, and for the price, it really does seal your makeup in place for a good few hours. It's vegan and cruelty free, and smells absolutely amazing.

Granted, this spray isn't for everyone because it has a very strong scent that lasts for a while, but I find it really refreshing. This product leaves my skin feeling dewy and fresh, but it's definitely not as strong as the previously mentioned Urban Decay setting spray.

For the price though, I think that's to be expected! You can find out more about the product here.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Dewy Setting Spray - £26

The setting spray promises to keep your makeup dewy(Image: Anastasia Beverly Hills)

This setting spray is lightly scented and definitely works throughout the day as opposed to instntly. It still keeps your makeup in tact, and keeps your skin looking nice and dewy and fresh.

However, if you struggle with oily skin, this product does sometimes cling to those areas and emphasise them. Don't get me wrong, it has a gorgeous formula and is very refreshing, but I still had to top up my makeup a couple of times after use. You can find out more about the product here.
