A food expert has been experimenting with five different ways to keep avocados fresher for longer.

Samira Kazan, author of Lebanese Cuisine and known as @alphafoodie on TikTok, explained first method involved storing the avocado in water in a glass container with a lid.

However, she quickly noted that while this kept the avocado green, it could potentially encourage bacterial growth and even lead to food poisoning. The second hack was to squeeze some lemon or lime juice onto the cut surface of an avocado and then wrap it in cling film before refrigerating it.

"I 100% like this one, after a few days it maintained its green colour too," she said. Her least favourite method was storing a cut avocado alongside a cut onion in a glass container with a lid: "This whole thing is wrong definitely wrong, the entire thing smells of onion."

Her fourth hack demonstrated how to cut an avocado into slices, skin and pit it before popping the pieces into a freezer bag: "This one can be used in smoothies and other recipes – this is great in my opinion," she exclaimed. The final hack featured her freezing prepared guacamole into ice cube trays: "I like this one," she declared.

"It maintained the colour, and although it was slightly watery, it wasn't bad." She quizzed her followers on their favourite hack, and their responses came in swiftly with one expressing regret that she didn't favour the avocado in water method: "I thought that one was the best!" Another pitched in with their own avo tip: "Avocado in oil and cling film works best for me."

A different user suggested keeping unopened avocado fresh by storing it in cold water within a tin in the fridge, while another insisted the cling film was redundant: "You don't need cling film, any citrus, including vinegar, and leaving it open in the fridge is fine."

Yet another divulged a family secret: "You should try using an empty avocado shell to protect the other side and put it in the fridge. That's what my mum taught me!"
