by Meghan Coon · The MirrorDespite people online sharing their 'tips and tricks' for banishing black mould, with home cleaning solutions and DIY recommendations, it turns out these popular hacks may actually be making it worse.
Recommended on social media, a homemade trick became widely popular as a surefire way to get rid of black mould spots for good. This involved using household bleach to target and fend off the pesky mould, however - though this may appear to be working immediately, it actually is making the mould worse. This is what you should be using instead.

In a blog post from RPF Environmental, this combination of bleach and water which has been dubbed a great "hack" to fight black mould, is actually just causing it to spread further.
The blog reads: "Since bleach doesn’t kill the roots underneath porous surfaces, it will only cause the mould to grow deeper and stronger as a reaction to the bleach. Also, bleach contains around 90% water. So once the chlorine evaporates and only the water is left, it will soak into the surface and feed the mould spores underneath it. This will make the infestation worse."
What you should be using instead is a dehumidifier, which is a great investment for any home, as they are designed to get rid of the moisture in your home, which is the main cause of black mould spreading - plus, they're incredibly useful for other tasks like drying laundry.
So if bleach and water haven't been working for you, you're going to want to grab one of these beauties to help keep your house mould-free.
