Miyamoto: Nintendo Won't Be Opening Museums In Other Locations
"We have no intention of expanding"
by Liam Doolan · Nintendo LifeThe Nintendo Museum looks amazing but it's located in Japan and not everybody will be able to make the trip. So, is there a chance of Nintendo opening more museums outside of its homeland?
Well, as you can see in the headline, according to Miyamoto this won't be happening. In a recent Game Watch interview, the Nintendo legend mentioned how the company had "no intention" of expanding its museum to other locations.
He goes on to explain how it's not a "business project" and is more about educating employees and the general public:
Shigeru Miyamoto: "This was not created as a business project, but rather to help Nintendo employees understand Nintendo better, and to help the general public learn more about Nintendo. So we have no intention of expanding it to other locations.
He went on to reveal the only thing being considered is how to further develop the new museum located in Kyoto, Japan - so it can "keep up with Nintendo's developments" in the future.
If you do want to see Nintendo's history then, it seems you'll just have to make the trip to Japan. And if you do make the journey, be on the lookout for some seriously cool merch:

That's not a huge surprise. They've always made it pretty clear they are keeping the core of their culture firmly rooted in Japan.

It would be cool if it could be a traveling exhibit someday.

I would like to see the light gun game added to the theme parks.

Unfortunate, considering the costs of air travel. It seems pretty cool.
As a U.S. resident, I guess the closest I could get would be to visit Super Nintendo World in California some time.
Thats unfortunate. Guess I have to keep on saving cash then.

Makes sense. The actual heritage is in Japan.
I guess it makes sense. I would enjoy something up in Washington. I doubt I'll ever be able to visit the one in Japan.
hope this increases tourism and makes a stronger yen
If it attracts a lot of foreign tourists then I'm sure that we'll see a US location within a couple of years too.

Of course they weren't. They built the dang thing on the old processing plant for their hanafuda cards. Can't replicate that aura.
This isn't shocking news or anything..
Now where's the direct?

Yeah, as cool as it would be to have Nintendo Museums elsewhere it makes sense for it to stay not only in Japan, but also in that specific location as others also mentioned.
On the other hand, I hope we'll eventually see at least Super Nintendo World in more and more parts of the world, not "just" Japan and the US!

Makes sense. I mean if you went to to Japan in the hopes of seeing the Gulf War Game Boy only to be told that 'oh, that's at our Seattle branch. Sorry' then you're going to walk away disappointed whereas having it located in one location where all Nintendo history is makes the trip special
Obviously, I don't know if that game boy is actually there but it was that or those early Mario mascot costumes or those adult films to use as an example...
Yet another reason to travel to Japan 😍

@DwaynesGames I was thinking the same. There are enough large exhibition spaces around the world that it could tour for a couple of years and do very well.

That is a shame, but I hadn't expected them to do more museums to begin with. Some pieces will be unique and can't be put in other museums. I'm saving up money to go to Japan at some time in the future, so I'll go there at some point, I hope.
Disappointing, but not surprising
@KBuckley27 Compared to the last few decades or so, this is probably an entirely accurate statement. The yen is not exactly strong right now.

Miyamoto also said that he used to give lectures to new employees for about 20 years about Nintendo's history, and it was getting longer as time passed by. So, this is a really great solution for that.
It's not a huge surprise. Personally I'd rather have a Nintendo Store or Super Nintendo World somewhere in Europe before they expand this anywhere. Seriously, what gives? I'm aware Universal is planning a UK park so the latter is likely, but we still need a store let's be honest.
