Meta-owned WhatsApp offers a range of features and services for a secure and easy messaging experience, including end-to-end encryption, scam prevention, background filters for video calls, and features like status likes and private mentions. However, when it comes to personalization, WhatsApp feels somewhat limited in its traditionally offered options. But now, WhatsApp is planning to introduce more customisation options with a new custom chat themes feature.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has begun beta testing its new custom chat theme feature. This will allow users to personalise their conversations. Initially reported in August, the feature is now being rolled out to WhatsApp beta users.

Currently, WhatsApp allows users to switch between system default, light, and dark themes. However, with this new update, Android users in the Google Play Beta Program—starting with WhatsApp version 2.24.21.34—will gain access to a range of new customization options, including up to 22 different chat themes and 20 colour variations.

Once the feature becomes available, users will find a new "Chat Theme" settings page where they can change the theme for individual chats. This page will include settings to customise both the chat colour and the background wallpaper.

Users will also be able to set a default theme for all conversations to maintain a consistent look across the app or select different themes for specific chats. Additionally, the update will allow users to apply a complementary chat colour each time a new theme is selected. For those seeking even more control, WhatsApp will enable users to manually adjust the chat colour for each conversation, providing a unique and personalised feel. Notably, these changes will remain private—only visible to the user who made them. The recipient will not see any of the customizations, allowing for personal expression without affecting the messaging experience of others.

As for availability, this exciting feature is reportedly still in beta testing. A limited number of beta testers on Android have received the update, and it's also being rolled out for iOS users with WhatsApp version 24.20.71. However, right now even some beta users might not see the feature immediately, as it will be rolled out in the coming days.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp recently launched a new tool for video calls. Users can now apply filters to their video calls, with ten different options like Warm, Cool, and Dreamy, allowing for creative expression. Additionally, WhatsApp has also introduced a background customization option, allowing users to change what appears behind them with options ranging from cosy living rooms to beach settings, or using a blur effect for privacy.

In addition to filters and backgrounds, WhatsApp has also added a Touch Up feature. A Low Light option is also now available to improve video clarity in dim settings, ensuring a bright, vibrant display. Users can access these features during calls by tapping the effects icon.
