iPhone touchscreen problems after updating to iOS 18? You’re not alone!

Some early adopters who installed iOS 18.0 onto their iPhones report various issues affecting the touchscreen responsiveness.

It’s unclear how widespread the problem might be. For what it’s worth, I was hit with this issue on both my old and new iPhones after installing iOS 18. Sometimes, the virtual keyboard wouldn’t recognize characters when typing faster.

I’ve noticed the swipe-up gesture doesn’t work reliably on my iPhone 16 Pro Max. The problem seems rooted in software, and we expect a fix from Apple soon-ish.

Other times, the onscreen keyboard would start slowing down to the point where I’d have to restart my iPhone to be able to type normally again. Other issues I’ve experienced include touches not recognized at all or being slow to accept. Folks on Reddit complained about unresponsive areas on the screen. I’ve also noticed this when using gestures like swipe-up-to-get-to-the-Home-Screen.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro have noticeably thinner bezels, which seems to sometimes cause the display to fail to register touches along display edges. However, my iPhone 14 Pro Max has had this issue since installing iOS 18, so this is a software error, not a hardware issue.

A Mastodon user speculated that Apple’s gestural algorithm has an error and has figured out how to trigger the issue. “It seems if palm rejection kicked in, it locks up all touch inputs,” he said. We’ll keep you posted…
