tvOS 18.2 brings four new Apple TV screen savers, including Snoopy

Apple’s tvOS 18.2 software update will bring four new screen savers to your Apple TV when it launches later in 2024, including Snoopy.

Apple is currently testing tvOS 18.2. We already know that new Apple Intelligence features will drop sometime in December with 18.2, iPadOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2, and we also expect tvOS 18.2 to be part of this. Mark Gurman said on Bloomberg that those updates will launch during the first week of December.

Back in 2018, Apple licensed rights to use Snoopy, an anthropomorphic beagle in the beloved comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz, in its software platforms. In 2023, the watchOS 10 software brought the interactive Snoopy watch face featuring Snoopy and Woodstock. In addition, Apple TV+ offers both classic Peanuts content and specials created exclusively for the streaming service.

tvOS 18.2: Snoopy and other new Apple TV screen savers arriving in December

Aaron Perris discovered references to the upcoming screen savers in the tvOS 18.2 code. The update should bring four new themes to Apple TV screen savers: Snoopy, TV and Movies, Music and Soundscapes.

TV and Movies cycles through stills from the Apple TV+ movies and shows. The Music screen saver creates an animated collage based on album artwork. The Soundscapes one seems to cycle through calming scenes, like water droplets.

Snoopy takes over the screen with Woodstock “in a delightful animation before coming to a rest in various locations, including his doghouse,” reads Apple’s description. The Snoopy and Portraits screen savers only work on the second-generation Apple TV 4K or later, according to the fine print on Apple’s website.

Other new features coming alongside tvOS 18.2

Apple wrote in a September 16 press release accompanying iOS 18.0’s launch that tvOS 18.2 will bring additional features besides new screen savers, including support for playing 21:9 movies and shows on projectors.

Unfortunately, tvOS 18.0 seems to have removed the option to change the slide duration from the Apple TV screen saver settings. It doesn’t look like an omission because the option is nowhere to be seen in tvOS 18.2.
