Quality Street announces major shake-up that could change Christmas forever

The new boxes, which will be on sale in some Tesco stores across the country, are more environmentally friendly than the plastic ones, which were introduced in the 2010s.

Quality Street always leaves people facing a tricky decision about which one to go for, but there is a different type of choice this year – tin, plastic or paper.

In a move that is kinder to the environment, the makers are trialling a paper box for the assortment of chocolates and toffee. It means it could be the last Christmas for the plastic tub.

Nestle has produced 200,000 of the paper boxes, which are set to go on sale next week.

Jemma Handley, a brand manager for Quality Street, said bosses are looking forward to seeing what people make of the idea.

She added: “A lot of care has gone into the trial, and we’re proud to be the first major manufacturer to trial a paper tub at Christmas.”

The classic Quality Street tin will continue to be available.

Two years ago, Nestle replaced Quality Street’s plastic wrappers with recyclable paper.

The company said it removed two billion wrappers a year out of landfill, but the move was not popular with everyone.

Big rival Roses, which are made by Cadbury, will continue to be sold in the standard plastic tubs and tins that we’re used to.
