At first glance, the chunky black glasses look like any other basic pair of spectacles.
However, Zuckerberg explained at the event that the glasses can use holograms to overalay digital content on to the real world.
'For now, I think the right way to look at Orion is as a time machine,' the Chief Executive said.
'These glasses exist, they are awesome and they are a glimpse of a future that I think is going to be pretty exciting.'
Following the event, several users flocked to X (formerly Twitter) to give their first impressions of the glasses.

'I know they're just a prototype*, but as someone that wears some pretty hefty frames already, those #Orion glasses look terribly uncomfortable, heavy and aesthetically s****,' one user wrote.
Another added: '#meta's @orion feeling quite chunky, isn't it?'
And one vented: 'When are tech companies gonna learn that nobody wants stuff hanging off their face?
'The Meta Orion looks stupid, like every other face gadget.'
Meanwhile, others pointed out the similarities between Orion and other famous glasses.
'The #Meta #Orion glasses look like the ones worn by badass directors and actors in the 70s/80s, right?,' one user tweeted, alongside a photo of Michael Caine.
And one joked: 'Still too bulky a design though and will need some more iterations before they get smaller.

Thankfully, the glasses shown off on stage were merely an early prototype.
Meta says it plans to work on making the glasses smaller, sleeker and more low-cost before releasing them to consumers later on.
Speaking to Reuters before the event, a source said that Meta aims to ship its first commercial AR glasses to consumers in 2027.
