Paul Warne may not have the luxury of an enormous transfer budget, but he is exceeding expectations at Derby County according to new figures.

Transfermarkt have put together a league table that compares the value of squads to their current position in the division. And it makes for interesting reading as far as Warne's Derby are concerned with the club being considered the second best performing team in the league.

There is a long-held theory in football that the size of your playing budget often correlates to where you finish in the league table. Derby's spend this summer equated to around £2.7m, which was around what they made in sell-on clauses inserted into deals such as Omari Kellyman and Liam Delap.

That money was spent on Ebou Adams, Kenzo Goudmijn and Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, with the rest of Derby's additions coming through loans and free transfers with 11 deals being concluded in the summer.

Transfermarkt have estimated that Derby's current squad value is around £19m which puts them 22nd in the Championship when judging the teams who have the most valuable group of players.

And with the Rams sitting 14th in the table ahead of today's game against QPR, they are eight places better off in the table than where they should be. Oxford are currently the best performing team in the Championship when squad value is compared to league position with the Us being 12 places better off. Their squad value is estimated at £17m.

Among the worst performers are rock-bottom Cardiff City who are 10 places below where they should be with a squad worth an estimated £39m. But eclipsing them are Luton Town who were relegated from the Premier League last season. Their squad value is ranked at a considerable £84m.

That puts them third in the list of clubs in terms of value but when judged against league position, they are 17 places behind where they should be according to transfermarkt with the Hatters currently 20th in the league table.
