Game of the Year: Del Valle at Canutillo

In what could be the defacto district 1-5A division II championship, Del Valle (2-0) travels to Canutillo (3-0) on Friday for a highly-anticipated showdown between two of the city's best teams.

Del Valle enters the game fresh off a 62-6 win against El Paso High. Two weeks ago, the Conquistadores went toe-to-toe against Franklin on the road and eeked out a 24-14 win. Their defense played outstanding, recording six sacks and two interceptions in their non-district victory over the Cougars.

Head coach Rudy Contreras has two of the city's prized college football prospects in junior quarterback Jake Fette and senior ATH Manny Fuller. Fette, who holds offers from the likes of Arizona State, Houston, Texas Tech and UTEP, is 11-1 as a starter for Del Valle. He was the gunslinger for the Conquistadores' 31-7 win against Canutillo last year. Fuller is already committed to Utah and plays running back and defensive back.

Canutillo (3-0) returned nine of 11 starters on defense from last year, as they've currently out-scored opponents 70-10. Their signature win came in a grind-it-out week one shutout over 6A's Pebble Hills, 7-0. If they stand any chance against Del Valle on Friday, their defense needs to play even better than they've been so far—and they've been superb.

Eagles senior ATH Eduardo "Lalo" Carrillo is one of the city's best talent. He has 11 interceptions in 21 starts. Last year, he suffered through an injury-plagued season. However, he emerged onto the scene as a sophomore, where he totaled nine interceptions and a whopping 30 pass deflections. Canutillo will run its offense through quarterback Matthew Gasca (three passing touchdowns, one rushing) and running back Rene Huerta (132 rushing yards, three total touchdowns). However, they use Carrillo's big play ability on offense when they're backed into a corner.

The difference to me in this game is Del Valle's defense. I'm looking forward to watching Canutillo's defense try and contain a high-power Del Valle offense. But the Conquistadores are much improved defensively and, as a result, Canutillo could struggle to score. If the Eagles can make this game ugly, force Del Valle's first turnover of the season and control the clock, they could pull off a huge victory and secure the crown as the city's best team.

Prediction: Del Valle 21 - Canutillo 13

Northeast Showdown: Chapin vs. Andress

In a battle of 1-2 teams, Chapin plays host to Andress (at Austin High) for a key district 1-5A division II matchup. The winner of this game almost certainly earns a path for a playoff spot in the highly competitive district. The loser will be in a dog fight against the likes of Hanks (2-0) and Burges (1-2) for the final playoff spot.

The Huskies won the first game of the Marco Chavez coaching era in a 69-0 route over Horizon last week. Prior to that, Chapin hung in against Eastwood (49-34) and ultimately fell in a shoot-out. Junior ATH Daveon Singleton has 587 all-purpose yards, including 10 total touchdowns.

The Golden Eagles are fresh off a 61-6 win versus Jefferson last week. Prior to that, Andress lost at El Dorado (48-7) and at Coronado (28-18) in non-district play. Senior ATH Jared Gordon leads them with 94 receiving yards per game and three total touchdowns.

Prediction: Chapin 45 - Andress 31
