Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou will make late checks on Son Heung-min, Cristian Romero and Timo Werner ahead of their clash with Aston Villa on Sunday, while Micky van de Ven has been ruled out.

Van de Ven suffered a hamstring strain in Tottenham's 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. He also missed Spurs' home clash against Villa last season, which Unai Emery's side won 2-1.

“Micky is the main one,” Postecoglou said when asked for team news ahead of the Villa game. “He has strained a hamstring but it is not too serious. After the international break for him.

“The other one was Romero and Werner but they still have a chance for the weekend. Sonny trained today and if he gets through tomorrow should be okay.”

Tottenham have lost two of their last three league games, but host Villa having won their last five home matches in all competitions. Tottenham have lost three of their last four Premier League meetings with Villa, though did win the last such match 4-0 in March.

Spurs host Villa having lost nine of their last 16 Premier League games, with only Wolves (12) losing more since the first game in this run since April. Spurs had only lost seven of their first 31 games under Postecoglou.

Villa, meanwhile, suffered only their second defeat of the season in all competitions in midweek after losing to Crystal Palace. Unai Emery decided to rest Emi Martinez, Ezri Konsa, Pau Torres, Lucas Digne, Amadou Onana, Youri Tielemans, Ross Barkley, Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins, while Jacob Ramsey and Matty Cash - the only senior players on the bench - didn't get on the pitch.

After facing Spurs, Villa will turn their attention to their fourth Champions League league phase clash against Club Brugge on Wednesday night.

A trip to Anfield to face Liverpool then awaits Villa next Saturday before the November international break.
