Jhon Duran completes stunning Aston Villa turnaround as new contract details revealed

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran has signed a new long term contract with the club

by · Birmingham Live

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran's electric start to the season has been rewarded with a new contract, which the club have confirmed he has agreed. Duran, 20, signed for Villa from Chicago Fire in January 2023 for an initial fee of just shy of £15m and that is increasingly looking like a bargain deal.

After a first 18 months at the club in which Duran was eased into his new surroundings and required him to be patient as first choice striker Ollie Watkins continued to do the business in front of goal, Duran has really announced himself this season - indeed you could argue there was a precursor at the end of last season against Liverpool, an indicator of what was to come.

Duran scored eight goals in 37 appearances in all competitions for Villa, but he has already netted six goals in ten appearances this term - and five of them have been from the bench, including in the 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week. Duran has netted against West Ham, Leicester, Everton, Wolves and Wycombe in the EFL Cup to lay down a platform for a season full of promise.

It's arrived after an uncertain summer in which his future was up in the air; indeed Duran was quoted as saying that he'd be open to leaving Villa, with West Ham and Chelsea interested, and that led to criticism from sections of the fanbase. What a turnaround, then, to have both won back the club's supporters with performances and goals and which, in turn, have led to Duran committing his long-term future to the club. It's a deal which runs until 2030.

The Colombian international, who has 12 caps for his country, has scored 14 goals in 59 appearances for Villa to date, but he has started only 11 games - and, remarkably, only three of those have been in the Premier League.
