Reports indicate that the Greek Football Federation has been in "constant contact" with UEFA, seeking to postpone Thursday night's Nations League game versus England due to the tragic death of George Baldock. Local authorities in Greece confirmed the death of the England-born Greek international Baldock, aged 31.

The football world was left in shock over the player's death, and according to Greek publication SDNA, efforts were made by the Greek FF to delay the match scheduled at Wembley Stadium. Nonetheless, it is understood that UEFA turned down the postponement request.

Baldock, a former Sheffield United player born in Buckinghamshire, represented Greece 12 times after qualifying through his grandmother. The Greek FF issued a heartfelt statement on Wednesday night: "With profound sadness and sorrow, the national team and the Greek Football Federation bid farewell to George Baldock."

The statement expressed a deep loss: "There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the unexpected loss of one of our own, young, man. The moment forces silence. Condolences to his family. Condolences from his second family."

In response to the sad news, England's team conveyed their condolences: "We're extremely saddened by the passing of George Baldock," reports Football London.

"George was close to many of our players, and represented Greece – our opponents on Thursday night. We're thinking of George's family, friends and team-mates at club and country at this difficult time."
