Carlos Corberan reveals West Brom injury setback - but already has solutions in mind
by Daniel Newbould, https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/authors/daniel-newbould/ · Birmingham LiveThree huge injury blows have been confirmed by West Bromwich Albion ahead of Friday's 8pm kick-off against Luton Town, but boss Carlos Corberan is confident he has a solution to the problem.
Paddy McNair has a hamstring injury and is out for two months while Semi Ajayi needed surgery and will be out for four months. Kyle Bartley has had minor surgery this week and will be out for four to six weeks.
Ajayi and Bartley have been the preferred choice at centre-half this season so it means Mason Holgate is expected to deputise alongside Torbjørn Heggem, moving from left-back, with Gianluca Frabotta or Callum Styles filling in for him.
Confirming the blows at this morning's pre match press conference, Corberan said: "Unfortunately we have been suffering some injuries in game situations. In the last game we suffered Paddy and Semi.
"Out of both, Semi has been the more complicated. Semi needed surgery and with this surgery you are out for around 16 weeks. It was an injury in the hamstring.
"Paddy is different. He didn't need surgery but he will be around two months more or less. So maybe now it is around seven weeks as the game was last week. That is the last update on these players.
"Bartley had his surgery. Everything has been well. From the surgery it is around four to six weeks the time we expect to not have him.
"It is a pity because all the injuries are similar positions in terms of centre-backs, but it is what it is. We still have very good solutions.
"Still I need to make a decision to select them because we can play with four or five at the back. We have defenders like Frabotta, for example, who didn't play in the last games. Diakité, even if he is not a specific centre back, for me has the possibilities to play in this position too.
"Always in my life, when I have been facing difficulties, you need to be focussed on the solutions not the problems, and we can find solutions according to these needs that we are going to have.
"When you create a squad the challenge sometimes is there are players not being used but they are in the squad for these reasons. Players that didn't play a lot are going to have the possibility to help the team, to compete and to defend our club in the pitch."
One player on the lips of many Albion fans is Caleb Taylor, who is currently on loan at Wycombe, a team flying high in League One, second only to big spending Birmingham City.
Corberan confirmed there is an option to recall the player mid-season. He added: "Yes in January. Always when we make loans with a player that needs game time we keep the possibility to make a recall in January because it is important to manage this to ensure the loan is working well, or maybe it is not working or maybe you have a need.
"Right now, let's say it has not been my priority to follow his progress. In some points I do because we always have a plan to talk with the players about how we are watching, we have a loan manager following the progress.
"We are happy how he is progressing. The information I receive is very positive, it makes us happy. The target of his loan was to give him minutes, during this year he is having minutes and with these minutes we think that it is exactly what he needs to develop as a player.
"I think he is showing his level in a League One team and he is showing the consistency in one position that I wanted to develop with one formation that I wanted to see. I think this loan is suiting him very well."
