Ruben Amorim's surprise choice of car gives insight into the person Man Utd are getting as manager
by Keith Wales, Alex Turk · Birmingham LiveRuben Amorim, the 39 year old Portuguese tactician set to take over at Old Trafford next week, is likely to be ushered into Manchester United's Carrington training base in one of the club's signature blacked-out Mercedes vehicles. However, the true character of United's new head coach, who will officially take up his role on Monday, can be gleaned from his choice of personal vehicle.
Amorim will finalise his move from Sporting on November 11, after overseeing last night's 4-1 Champions League demolition of Manchester City - a triumph guaranteed to endear him to his new fans.
Much will be revealed about Amorim's personality during his introductory press conference, but his car choice already provides some insight. Six years ago, Petter Skogsletten and Geoff Labine spent a week with Amorim while he was studying for a master's degree in high-performance football coaching at the University of Lisbon.
Despite having earned 14 caps for Portugal and making 153 appearances for Benfica during his playing career, both Skogsletten and Labine, along with course convenor Antonio Veloso, described the incoming United boss as "humble."
Skogsletten added: "For him, it doesn't matter if you've been playing at this level, he's at the same level as you. He opened up and he was himself with you," reports the Express.
Labine has shared a light-hearted insight into Amorim's down-to-earth nature, despite being one of the world's most sought-after coaches. "I would joke with Ruben because he's driving the most unassuming Smart car, those little cube cars," Labine said.
"I'm looking for the Maserati or the Bugatti or something. He goes: 'No Geoff, you don't understand. I'm different. I'm not like that.'" Since signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with United last Friday, Amorim has impressed many with his humility and approachability. On Monday, while expressing his eagerness to start in Manchester, Amorim acknowledged the difficulty of leaving Sporting after a significant four years.
Speaking to TNT Sports, he admitted: "[It's been] very tough. The worst and best week of my life. I don't have another way to explain [it]."
"Very tough because I'm leaving a very good place, but I'm going to one of the best clubs in the world. So it's been very tough, but it is what it is."
"I'm emotional, but not in this part. I know because I was a player, and I know that in our lives, we have to leave, go, and change our environment quite often."
That was before he handed Sporting that very rare parting gift - a victory for the ages over Pep Guardiola's four-time Premier League champions.
He said after the famous victory: "What I can tell you is that this [result] doesn't mean anything in particular - don't take anything from this. We cannot transport one reality to another. Manchester United cannot play the way we play and we will have to adapt.
"It's misleading, we were very lucky today, but the feeling with my players, the way they celebrate with the fans was very special. I take this with me but when I arrive to the Premier League it is a different world, different pressure. It will be fun, very fun, and I'm ready for the challenge."
