McGinn, Cash, Mings - Aston Villa injury latest and return dates as Unai Emery handed fresh blow after Wolves win

Aston Villa have four more games left to play before the October international break

by · Birmingham Live

Aston Villa suffered an injury blow in their win over Wolves as captain John McGinn picked up a hamstring injury at the end of the first half.

McGinn was replaced by Leon Bailey for the start of the second half and Villa managed to stage a comeback later in the game as Ollie Watkins restored parity following Matheus Cunha's opener in the 25th minute. Ezri Konsa completed the comeback by applying the finish to Youri Tielemans' cross, before Jhon Duran got in on the act, scoring his fourth goal of the season by tapping in Morgan Rogers' cross in added time.

Villa will play Wycombe Wanderers in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night (8pm) before facing Ipswich Town at Portman Road next Sunday (2pm). Unai Emery's side then host Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday, October 2 (8pm) and Manchester United four days later on Sunday, October 6 (2pm) before the October international break.

Here is the latest on the injury front...

John McGinn

McGinn faces a race against time to return to fitness for Villa's Champions League game with Bayern after coming off with a hamstring injury on Saturday. He will undergo tests to determine the severity of the issue.

Asked about McGinn's injury after full-time, Emery said: "It is his hamstring. When we arrived here, he had a hamstring injury against Tottenham in the January and today I think it is less than that injury. But he will be not available, I think, for a few weeks."

Possible return date: Unknown

Jaden Philogene

Philogene was ruled out of Villa's win over Wolves because he is still recovering from a knock he picked up last weekend. It is unclear when he could return, but it is not a serious injury.

Speaking of Philogene's condition on Friday, Emery said: "He had a kick and he was out for two weeks until the match against Everton. Just on the last action when he was dribbling, he got another kick in the same place."

Possible return date: Ipswich Town v Aston Villa, September 29

Matty Cash

The full-back provided Villa with their first scare of the season after pulling up with a hamstring issue during the early stages of August's defeat to Arsenal. He is hopeful of returning to training in the coming week.

"I'm hoping to train next week because I can’t miss that Bayern Munich game," Cash told CBS Sports "I'm going to do everything I can to be back for that!"

Possible return date: Aston Villa vs Bayern Munich, October 2

Tyrone Mings

The central defender has not been seen in action since the opening day of the 2023/24 campaign after suffering an ACL injury.

Like Kamara, he has returned to full team training and all going well - with no need to rush him back - the 31-year-old will play a part after the next international break.

Possible return date: Fulham v Aston Villa, October 19

Boubacar Kamara

Emery has been without Kamara since February of this year, when he sustained ACL damage against Manchester United. It has been a long road to recovery, but one he is not far from the end of.

There will be no need to rush him back into the fold straight away though as the plan is to reintegrate him in the squad once fully ready in a few weeks. By then could be the international break, so his return could fall after that.

Possible return date: Fulham v Aston Villa, October 19
