Ezri Konsa posts message after Aston Villa injury which has made him an England doubt

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa is the latest injury doubt to Unai Emery and England after he withdrew early in the Manchester United draw

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa is the club's latest injury doubt after he was forced off in the goalless draw with Manchester United on Sunday. Villa added another point to their Premier League tally following the dull stalemate but centre half Konsa has prompted another concern after going to ground in the first half and being forced off.

Konsa, who has operated at right-back recently in place of the injured Matty Cash, returned to the heart of defence on Sunday following Cash's recovery, appeared to land awkwardly when clearing the ball and immediately went to ground in some distress. He was consoled by teammate, Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, before he was replaced by Diego Carlos.

Konsa was an injury scare for Villa back in September before the last international break; he was forced off on that occasion while representing England against Finland in the Nations League, but he returned to Villa duty and was immediately available to Unai Emery after venturing back to Bodymoor Heath.

The defender's availability to the Three Lions, for who now he is a routine selection in the squad, this time around has been cast into significant doubt ahead of England's double header as their Nations League campaign continues. They welcome Greece to Wembley on Thursday evening and then travel to Finland for a meeting in Helskinki on Sunday evening.

In the aftermath of the United game, Konsa posted a photo of himself with Martinez as he sat up on the pitch awaiting treatment, accompanied with a flexing muscle emoji, as all concerned with Villa await to learn the extent of the centre half's setback. Villa are already without John McGinn, while Jacob Ramsey and Amadou Onana missed Sunday, too.

"I don’t know if it’s a big or small injury," said Emery. "The players who do not play with their national teams have to rest now and we will try to get players like Amadou Onana, Jacob Ramsey and John McGinn back in the next two weeks. Hopefully we will soon have Boubacar Kamara and Tyrone Mings available after long-term injuries and then we have Emiliano Buendia who is getting fitter."

Mings and Kamara both played 45 minutes in the Premier League 2 meeting with Newcastle United at Bodymoor Heath on Saturday. Villa's under 21s continue their Bristol Street Motors Trophy campaign on Tuesday night when they travel to Bolton Wanderers.
