Toyota rejoins Formula 1 as Haas technical partner

Toyota has rejoined Formula 1 as a technical partner to the MoneyGram Haas F1 Team effective immediately, with the Japanese manufacturer’s motorsport division Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) having signed a multi-year agreement with the team which will run alongside its present arrangement with Ferrari as a customer team.

The new multi-year agreement will see both parties share knowledge, expertise and resources, with TGR to provide design, technical and manufacturing services, while Haas will offer technical expertise and commercial benefits in return.

While there is no upcoming Formula 1 engine from Toyota, TGR will gradually assume responsibility for areas presently shouldered by Ferrari and chassis builder Dallara, with possible areas including aerodynamics development, simulation work and parts manufacturing, according to The Race.

“The ability to tap into the resources and knowledge base available at Toyota Gazoo Racing, while benefiting from their technical and manufacturing processes, will be instrumental in our own development and our clear desire to further increase our competitiveness in Formula 1. In return we offer a platform for Toyota Gazoo Racing to fully utilize and subsequently advance their in-house engineering capabilities,” said MoneyGram Haas F1 Team principal Ayao Komatsu.

This should, in turn, make Haas’ development in the sport more cost- and time-efficient through improving the availability of the team’s resources. Haas will go to the next race, the United States Grand Prix with Toyota Gazoo Racing branding present on both its VF-24 cars. The team is currently seventh in the F1 constructors championship standings, ahead of Williams, Alpine and Sauber.

Toyota’s participation in Formula 1 as a team entry concluded at the end of the 2009 season, though the Japanese manufacturer retained some connection with the current era of Formula 1. Its TF109 racer served as the test car for Pirelli’s entry to the sport as the tyre supplier, which continues to the present day.
