Newcastle anger with Anthony Gordon after Liverpool transfer reports

Liverpool transfer target Anthony Gordon endured a challenging afternoon with Newcastle United in the Premier League clash against Fulham. Eddie Howe's side, despite dropping just two points so far this season, have looked off the pace in the first few weeks of the campaign with Gordon struggling to make a major impact.

For the Saturday afternoon trip to Craven Cottage, Gordon was again named in the starting XI with Alexander Isak also included despite huge doubts surrounding his fitness. Minus Harvey Barnes, the Newcastle attack have struggled with Gordon managing just one goal from five league starts.

Against the Cottagers, Newcastle quickly fell behind with Raul Jimenez and Emile Smith Rowe both on target in the first 22 minutes. Barnes pulled one back moments after the second half began but Reiss Nelson restored Fulham's two-goal advantage in the final stages.

Gordon, as has become somewhat of a regular occurrence, struggled to get into the game though he did force Bernd Leno into a smart save in the second period. Despite that, it appears Newcastle supporters are becoming fed up of the displays put in by their No.10 with an interesting theory emerging that his head has been turned and he is no longer fully focused on Newcastle.

Over the summer transfer window, Gordon was strongly linked with a move to Liverpool, in a deal that could've seen Joe Gomez head the other way. However, that did not materialise with Yankuba Minteh's move to Brighton instead helping the Magpies solve the worrying financial predicament they found themselves in

Though Gordon has remained at St James' Park, links to the Reds have remained with Arne Slot signing Federico Chiesa proof he was looking for an attacking addition. With Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo also performing so well, there does not appear to be a clear place in the Liverpool squad for Gordon.

However, if an opportunity does emerge, it is well worth Liverpool acting on it given how Gordon has performed in the Premier League over the last few years. The 23-year-old has just over 18 months remaining on his contract amid talk of Newcastle wanting to offer him a new bumper deal.
