Former Sheffield United star George Baldock has tragically passed away at the age of 31, with the news being confirmed on Thursday morning

Sheffield United's Oli McBurnie has paid a touching tribute to his former team-mate George Baldock after receiving the heart-wrenching news of his untimely death in Greece.

The football world was shocked as reports from Greek media surfaced that 31-year-old Baldock was found in his swimming pool. Concern arose when Baldock's wife could not reach him for several hours.

It is believed that Baldock was found lifeless in his pool, and despite emergency services being called, his death was confirmed by an attending physician. Tributes have been pouring in honouring the skilled player since this tragic event came to light.

McBurnie, now of UD Las Palmas, expressed his sorrow on Instagram to his 105,000 followers with heartfelt words. He stated: "I genuinely can't believe you have gone brother, I feel sick. One of the best people I've ever met, you were loved by everyone you came across. My heart is broken for your beautiful little family. Sleep well GB I love you mate."

In response to McBurnie's post, numerous followers have shown their support in the comments section; one proposed: "I'm going to do a run from my house to Bramall lane to raise money for his friends and family. RIP GB2," reports the Mirror.

Another commented: "Sad news, was a top lad. Thoughts and prayers with his family."

The Blades have expressed their profound shock and deep sadness at the news of former player Baldock's death. The club released a statement saying: "Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock. The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him."

The Blades extended their heartfelt sympathies to his loved ones: "The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George's family and friends."

The England team also shared their grief in a statement: "We're extremely saddened by the passing of George Baldock. George was close to many of our players, and represented Greece our opponents on Thursday night. We're thinking of George's family, friends and team-mates at club and country at this difficult time."

From Greece, the Super League conveyed its condolences: "The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sorrow for the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our national team footballer, George Baldock, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones."
