Mike Tyson gives reason for fighting Jake Paul as he dismisses health concerns
by Taite Johnson, James Evans · Wales OnlineMike Tyson has revealed that his popularity is the main reason he's agreed to fight YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. It's been almost 20 years since the former undisputed heavyweight world champion last fought professionally, suffering a defeat by Kevin McBride in 2005.
After that match, Tyson retired and gave an emotional post-fight interview, which has recently resurfaced online ahead of his bout with 'The Problem Child'. Although Tyson did participate in an exhibition match with boxing legend Roy Jones Jr four years ago, there are concerns for his health ahead of the fight with Paul, who is 31 years younger.
These worries were amplified when the 58 year old had to withdraw from the original contest due to an ulcer flare-up. He was advised by doctors to cease training but has since returned to the gym.
Both Paul and Tyson are set to face off on November 15 at the AT&T Arena in Arlington, Texas. 'The Problem Child' enters the fight following a knockout victory over Mike Perry in July. For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter
With a record of 10-1, Paul's only loss in the sport was against Tommy Fury last year, reports the Mirror. The upcoming event, which will be broadcast live on Netflix, is expected to draw millions of viewers worldwide. Over 80,000 fans are anticipated to attend the epic showdown between the two fighters.
Tyson's contribution to these ticket sales is a key reason for his decision to fight the 27-year-old. In a recent interview with talkSPORT, when asked why he's fighting now, 'Iron Mike' said: "58. I'm going to fight in the biggest arena ever and it's going to be sold out, and who else can do that"?
When questioned about what it means to sell out such a large stadium in the States, he responded: "It makes me feel like I have to perform. They're giving me all that inspiration and letting me know that 'boy, you've got to perform tonight'. It's time to perform''.
In the same interview, the 58-year-old addressed concerns about his health given the imminent fight. He said: "Everything is sorted out. I had an ulcer problem. I was eating bad food."
When asked if he'll be ready for November 15, 'Iron Mike' replied: "Thank god". His comments followed a conversation with Mail Online, where Tyson admitted his diet was responsible for his past health issues.
"I was doing too much bad food and stuff, and I got sick,'' he said. However, he has since stated that he's now avoiding 'processed foods' and is 'eating clean' in preparation for his bout with the young American.
