Former Real Madrid, Chelsea and PSG midfielder Claude Makelele has been linked with the managerial post at Cardiff City.

The Bluebirds are almost three weeks into their search for Erol Bulut's successor, with Omer Riza having taken charge of the last three games on an interim basis.

There have been a number of candidates the Bluebirds board are understood to have taken a liking to, including Slaven Bilic and Ruben Selles, however LondonWorld claim Makelele is in talks over taking the post.

The Frenchman, 51, is now available after leaving his post as manager of Greek side Asteras Tripolis after just three weeks in charge. He told LondonWorld: "They promised me full control of the team. It was my decision who played or didn’t play. Transfers were not my responsibility.

"If you want to sack me because the results are not good, that’s fine. This is football. But I don’t want people telling me who should or shouldn’t play."

However, reports of him becoming the new Bluebirds boss have been played down to WalesOnline. Sign up to our Cardiff City newsletter here.

Meanwhile, esteemed Italian journalist Matteo Moretto claims Cardiff have enquired about Laurențiu Reghecampf.

The Romanian manager has had 18 managerial stints to date and is still only 49; the most notable club he's held the top job with is Romanian giants Steaua Bucharest, whom he managed twice between 2012-2014 and 2015-17.

Another former midfielder Reghecampf played for Bucharest but turned out the most times for German club Energie Cottbus.

His lengthy rolodex of clubs and jobs hints that he doesn't hang around too long wherever he goes. Moretto reports that Iranian club Esteghlal FC are keen on him and that Cardiff have "asked about him recently". How far those conversations actually went is yet to be determined,

Former Romania international Reghecampf's most recent gig was with AL-Tai in Saudi Arabia - he left in the summer.
