A Patriots quarterback change could be coming: ‘Notable shift’

Maye we soon see a change in Foxboro?

According to longtime Patriots’ reporter Mike Reiss, Drake Maye — the third overall selection from the 2024 NFL Draft — could soon be taking over the starting job in New England.

“Notable shift in Jerod Mayo’s answers regarding QB situation in his day-after-game video conference compared to past weeks,” Reiss posted to X on Monday. “Mayo said last week the way the team won its only game was ‘unsustainable’ and he seems to strongly be considering switch [sic] to Drake Maye.”

As recently as last week, the Patriots’ head coach was still sticking to his guns. Jacoby Brissett is “one hundred percent our starter,” Mayo told reporters on Sept. 30, one day after New England’s 30-13 Week 4 loss in San Francisco.

One hundred percent, despite Brissett finishing with his worst passer rating of the season: 70.8.

One hundred percent, despite the quarterback’s three fumbles and one interception.

One hundred percent, despite the Pats having scored just one offensive touchdowns in their past two games and falling to 1-3 on the season.

The Patriots’ own in-house reporter even said the team was “teetering on mutiny.”

Encouragement was needed and Sunday’s Week 5 loss to a depleted Miami squad offered none.

Though Brissett avoided turning the ball over and completed 18 of 34 passes for 160 yards, his passer rating, 65.8, was a new season-low.

Rhamondre Stevenson scored New England’s only touchdown and the Patriots fell to the Dolphins, 15-10.

Now on the heels of a fourth consecutive loss, Mayo be less than 100 percent.

When asked on Monday if he anticipated starting Drake Maye in Week 6, the head coach responded, “We’re in a solution-driven business, and we aren’t playing good football. We have to look at every single unit and every single player and figure out how we use this roster to go out there and win games.”

Maye has only seen the field once so far this season.

The rookie out of North Carolina made his NFL debut in Week 4 with 4:24 left in the fourth quarter and the Patriots down 24-3 to the Jets. He completed 4 of 8 passes for 22 yards.

The task will be tall in Week 6 no matter who lines up under center when the Patriot’s play host to C. J. Stroud and the 4-1 Houston Texans.
