Garrett Wilson: Jets offensive struggles about execution — not identity

The Jets entered Week 4 with a chance to go 3-1 for the first time since 2015.

Instead, they sputtered in a 10-9 loss to the Broncos, and though there have been some questions about the offense, one superstar said the team doesn’t need wholesale changes — it just needs to execute better.

Receiver Garrett Wilson said Tuesday on ESPN Radio’s “Bart & Hahn” that the Jets’ offense, which has had some ups and downs this season, understands its identity.

He did say, however, that the Jets need to execute better.

The Jets, rank 21st in points per game at 19 and 18th in passing yards per contest at 203.3.

“I don’t think we do a lot of different stuff to be honest,” Wilson said. “I watch football on Sundays and I see a lot of teams run, mix it up and stuff like that. I don’t think we do that. I think we know our identity. It’s just about going out and executing it or figuring out if it’s going to work. But I don’t think we’re trying a lot of different things.

“I know, personally, my route tree hasn’t been what it has been the last two years as far as the stuff I’ve been running. It’s just about figuring out if it’s the right identity and whether it’s going to win games.”

Wilson, however, did say that he does trust the team’s coaching staff and players to get things right.

He added that he needs to find better ways to “get involved” and get the ball “out in space” for the Jets.

Thus far this season, Wilson has 20 catches for 191 yards and a touchdown.

When asked about the cadence drama that has centered around quarterback Aaron Rodgers and head coach Robert Saleh over the team’s pre-snap penalties against Denver Wilson said he didn’t have an answer for getting things fixed other than getting better at it during practice.

Rodgers, on Tuesday on the “The Pat McAfee Show” called the issues the team had an “anomaly.”

“I don’t know exactly what’s going on,” Wilson said. “I watch the ball. With the lineman, having to worry about a D end and having to get off. There’s a lot that goes into it. We do ask a lot of our guys.”

The Jets will now go up against a 4-0 Vikings team with ex-Gang Green quarterback Sam Darnold at the helm in London on Sunday.
