Giants’ Dexter Lawrence fumes over notion Cowboys rookie got better of him: ‘Learn football’

· New York Post

Here is what you do not say to Dexter Lawrence:

Do not tell him that he was handled by Cooper Beebe, the Cowboys’ rookie center, in the Giants’ 20-15 loss in Week 4.

You can tell Lawrence about the analytics, that according to Pro Football Focus, Beebe was on the field for 22 pass-blocking snaps and that he did not allow a single pressure when going against Lawrence.

You can tell him that, but then watch out.

“You’re not going to sit here and hype up somebody that called for help all f–king game,’’ Lawrence told The Post Wednesday after practice. “You’re not going sit here and write a bad assessment, you need to learn football, whoever writes this, learn football and that’s that. That’s all I was saying. Don’t hype it up.

“I know that whoever [put that] out there did not watch the game properly. That is what I know. And tweet that and write that and say I said it just like that. You’re not about to tell me, this dude, watching tape, this dude blocked me. That’s it.’’

This clearly struck a nerve with Lawrence, one of the NFL’s most dominant interior defenders. He is not someone who regularly posts on his ‘X’ account but he could not hold back when he saw an item last week from Next Gen Stats that he was double-teamed on 80 percent of his pass rushes — 20 of 25 — in the game. That double-team frequency was tied for the highest rate in a game since at least 2016.

Lawrence actually estimates that 80 percent was a bit low. When he saw Beebe extolled for the job he did against Lawence, the player who sometimes refers to himself as “Sexy Dexy’’ posted “Don’t hype this he know how the game went’’ and added in a cartoon Gif of Foghorn Leghorn aggressively spanking Barnyard Dog.

Lawrence, 26, is ranked by PFF as the No. 2 interior defender in the league this season.

He rose to stardom in 2022 and now every opponent has a plan for him, every game. He rarely sees one blocker lined up between himself and the opposing quarterback.

“You have never once heard me say anything about a double team, any complaint about a double team, cry about it in my life,’’ Lawrence said. “That’s just the position I’m in, I just got to grow through it. It’s gonna happen, I got to expect it to happen, I just got to grow through it. Whatever production is through that, I just want to be dominant through the game and put my will on people, that’s my mind.’’
