KUCHING (Sept 25): Sarawak’s athletics team is on track to contribute toward the state’s goal of 83 gold medals, aiming to secure the overall championship at the Para Malaysia Games (Sukma) XXI.

Sarawak’s Assistant Chef de Mission, Loo Hun Ing, said that the state’s contingent for athletics consisting of 68 athletes – the largest in the Games – is targeting 30 gold medals across 100 events.

As of this afternoon, their performance has been promising, she said.

“With 23 gold medals already secured by this afternoon on the third day, we are on track to meet our target. This success is not just for the team, but for Sarawak.

“We are optimistic about reaching, and possibly surpassing, our goal. It certainly feels positive, and we’re getting closer,” she told reporters when met at Sarawak Stadium here today.

Recapping their achievements, Loo said that the team had won eight gold medals on the first day, 11 on the second day, and four by 4pm today, with the team aiming for more.

Loo expressed her pride when asked about the athletes’ preparations.

“They have performed exceptionally well and are well taken care of, which has contributed to these great results.

“We’re truly proud of their hard work and dedication, especially under the guidance of coach Matthew Chin,” she said.

Adding on, Loo said that the team has high hopes for the athletes competing in the remaining events.

“We are confident in our potential to become the overall champion.

“However, we must remain cautious, as overconfidence can be costly,” she added.
