Pep Guardiola is favourite to become the next permanent England manager.

Lee Carsley has taken on the role on an interim basis ever since Gareth Southgate resigned after the Euros in the summer. Figures from the FA have kept cards close to their chest about the managerial hunt although it has since emerged that Man City boss Guardiola has been sounded out about the job.

The ex-Spain international’s deal with the Premier League champions expires at the end of the season and he seemingly left the door open to the possibility of coaching England in a recent interview. “Leaving City? It’s not true, I haven’t decided yet,” Guardiola said when asked about his future on Italian TV show Che tempo Che Fa, as reported by Sky Italia.

“And it is not even true that I will be the next England coach. If I had decided I would say it… I don’t know either, anything can happen.”

Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is another favourite with the bookmakers for the England job, while Carsley himself is also in with a chance of being given the role on a full-time basis. According to latest William Hill odds, Guardiola is the 5/4 favourite to be the next England manager, after being as big as 12/1 last week.

Tuchel remains a strong contender, after being backed into as short as 8/15, but he has since lengthened to 13/8 second favourite. Other notable names in contention include Carsley (7/1), Eddie Howe (7/1), Graham Potter (10/1), Jurgen Klopp (33/1), Jose Mourinho (50/1) and Ange Postecoglou (50/1).

Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “Pep Guardiola is now the 5/4 favourite to become the next England manager after being slashed from 12/1. Rumours around the current Manchester City manager's future have hotted up this week with the England national team job emerging as a strong possibility for the Spaniard's next move.

“Ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was as short as 8/15 for the role, but he has now been pushed out to 13/8 and been usurped as favourite by Pep Guardiola.”
