Greece request England clash is postponed after George Baldock tragic death

Former Sheffield United defender George Baldock passes away on Wednesday aged 31

The Greek Football Federation has reportedly been in "constant contact" with UEFA in an attempt to postpone Thursday night's Nations League clash against England after George Baldock's tragic passing.

Local authorities in Greece confirmed that the body of the England-born Greek international Baldock, 31, was found in a swimming pool at his home in Southern Athens on Wednesday night.

In the aftermath of the defender's death, which stunned the footballing world, Greek publication SDNA reported that the Greek FF had been in contact with UEFA to try to postpone Thursday night's game at Wembley. However, it is claimed that UEFA rejected the request.

Former Sheffield United defender Baldock was born in Buckinghamshire but earned 12 caps for Greece after qualifying for the nation through his grandmother.

On Wednesday night, a statement from the Greek FF read: "With profound sadness and sorrow, the national team and the Greek Football Federation bid farewell to George Baldock.

"There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the unexpected loss of one of our own, young, man. The moment forces silence. Condolences to his family. Condolences from his second family."

Meanwhile, Greece's Nations League opponents, England said: "We're extremely saddened by the passing of George Baldock.

"George was close to many of our players, and represented Greece – our opponents on Thursday night. We're thinking of George's family, friends and team-mates at club and country at this difficult time."
