Viktor Gyokeres sends Arsenal £85m transfer reminder as Man United battle about to commence

Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres scored another two goals this midweek as the Arsenal transfer target continues his impressive start this season.

Gyokeres, 26, came on at half-time in their Portuguese League Cup quarter-final with Nacional after a goalless first half and bagged a brace to ensure their place in the final four. The club's captain, Morten Hjulmand, who the Gunners also reportedly have an interest in, opened the scoring with a driven first-time finish before his fellow Scandanavian doubled their advantage after winning and then converting a penalty.

Their opponents responded within a minute through a long-range Ruben Macedo strike, but Gyokeres restored the two-goal lead with a free kick. That was his 16th goal in 15 games this season.

The Sweden international, who has also scored five times in his last five caps for the national team, continues to excel despite the speculation surrounding Ruben Amorim. Before that tie, the Sporting coach reputedly agreed to succeed Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

Reports in Portugal even named Gyokeres as one of the multiple sporting players - alongside Hjulmand - who was unhappy about Amorim's expected departure. That evidently did not affect his performance, nor did rumours that the Lisbon club have lowered their asking price to below the player's much-reported release clause.

The fee written into his contract is said to be £84 million (€100m), but Sky Germany claims there is an agreement Gyokeres can leave in the summer for £51-59 million (€60-70m). Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City are said to be interested in the centre-forward.

Man United are also inevitably linked with Amorim becoming their prospective new head coach. Man City are also appointing Sporting's sporting director Hugo Viana, who signed Gyokeres from Coventry City, as their new director of football this summer to replace the departing Txiki Begiristain.
