Man Utd players told what to expect from Ruben Amorim by Premier League rival
Ruben Amorim has coached several players who are now operating in the Premier League and Tottenham's Pedro Porro - once of Sporting Lisbon - has talked up his personal touch
by Mike Walters, Samuel Meade · The MirrorPedro Porro worked under Ruben Amorim for three years and insists the incoming Manchester United boss gave him huge confidence - which allowed him to play his best football.
The Tottenham star moved to north London after impressing for Sporting Lisbon - where several players have been able to excel. Amorim has made the Portuguese side two-time champions after a long time behind Benfica and Porto in the pecking order.
The 39-year-old has received huge plaudits but Porro has cited the confidence he received from his former boss as one of his best assets. Current United star Manuel Ugarte is another player who was able to play his best football in Lisbon under Amorim.
United currently look like a side bereft of confidence with a number of their players operating well below their optimum levels but Porro has talked up Amorim's ability to make his players feel their best.
He said: “He’s coming to one of the best stages in the world, the Premier League, so I wish him the best and hope things go as well as possible for him. The confidence he gave me was fundamental for me, and that’s why, when I arrived at Sporting, things went well for me. Apart from him, the style of play also suited me well.”
Bruno Fernandes moved to Manchester from Sporting - but just missed out on being coached by Amorim. He's kept tabs on his former club though and has observed the way their outgoing coach has totally changed the way the club act.
"I am a big fan of Sporting and watch a lot of their games," he told BBC Sport. "Ruben Amorim brought the excitement back to the club - it was a little bit split when he came [to Sporting]. He transformed everything and brought everyone together."
Amorim's first game as United boss will come at Ipswich Town later this month. He still has two more matches to complete with Sporting this week before he officially begins work in Manchester - where he will find a team sitting in the bottom half of the table.
Sporting captain Morten Hjulmand said of Amorim as his departure nears: "Of course Ruben was one of the reasons I came to Sporting. When you work with Ruben you get a clear picture of how he sees football and how he sees you within the team. That picture for a player is important because then you know your role and what you should bring to the team."
