Baker Mayfield and his family were forced to evacuate their Florida home after their area was hit by Hurricane Helene, with the quarterback's wife sharing a heartfelt message

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, along with his wife and kids, had to flee their Florida home as Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on the area.

Described as the most powerful hurricane to ever strike the Big Bend region, Helene has since barrelled through South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia, claiming 59 lives as reported by CNN.

The storm's onslaught brought widespread flooding and significant wind damage, prompting the evacuation of thousands of families.

The Mayfields were among those impacted, but thankfully, NFL star Baker's spouse Emily confirmed via an Instagram story that their family was out of harm's way. "I do not have words to accurately describe my heartbreak for everyone affected by Hurricane Helene," she penned.

"You see this stuff on TV but until you live through it, you can't fully grasp the terror associated with the unknowns. Baker, Koko, Fergus, and I evacuated yesterday and are safe.

"Our sweet, sweet community got pummeled, but even that doesn't compare to the people up North who took this storm head-on. It's unfathomable. I'm so thankful to God for protecting us - and our home - and I'm praying nonstop for everyone dealing with the aftermath of the storm, the surge, the damage, the loss.

"Time to come together and help each other out. I have faith in this community," she said earnestly. Following Baker Mayfield's signing of a one-year deal with the Buccaneers, the Mayfields made their move to Florida in 2023, and their connection with the state has only strengthened since he inked an eye-watering three-year, $100million (£75m) extension in March.

Mayfield is currently one of the shining stars amongst NFL quarterbacks this season, although the Buccaneers now hold a 2-1 record after being on the wrong end of a 26-7 thrashing at the hands of the Denver Broncos in the third week. With personal stats for the current season sitting at 637 yards and six touchdowns, despite two interceptions, Mayfield is a player to watch.

Major travel disruptions are anticipated with Florida and Philadelphia airports preparing passengers for potential delays and possible cancellations, while Amtrak's train service to Miami will terminate early at Jacksonville.

In their most recent battle, the Buccaneers tasted defeat against the Eagles, concluding last year's regular-season clash at 25-11. Yet, they had the last laugh as Tampa Bay ousted Philadelphia in the first playoff round, mustering a surprising 32-9 victory.
