Shakhtar Donetsk and Atalanta will lock horns in a crucial Champions League showdown on Wednesday, with both sides eager to secure their first victory in this season's competition. The Italian side, buoyed by their recent performance against Arsenal, will be looking to exploit the fact that Shakhtar are unable to play their home games in Ukraine.

In their opening Champions League fixture, Shakhtar Donetsk were held to a goalless draw by Bologna. The Ukrainian team struggled throughout the match, managing just one shot on target—a penalty that was saved by Bologna’s goalkeeper, Lukasz Skorupski.

Shakhtar have been finding it hard to hit their stride this season. Under the guidance of Marino Pusic, they have managed two wins and two draws from their last four matches. Their most recent outing saw them share the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Veres Rivne in a domestic league fixture last weekend.

Atalanta also began their Champions League campaign with a 0-0 draw, holding their own against Premier League giants Arsenal. Despite showing glimpses of attacking prowess, including a missed second-half penalty by Mateo Retegui, they couldn't find the back of the net.

The reigning Europa League champions have not been at their peak performance lately. Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad has only secured two wins in their last eight matches across all competitions. Their latest game ended in a 1-1 draw against Bologna last weekend.

As both teams prepare for this midweek clash, each will be aiming to break their winless streak and gain some much-needed momentum in the Champions League.
