Liverpool contract dilemmas as new deal signed - but Mo Salah issue remains

Liverpool have confirmed that promising young defender Jarell Quansah has signed a new deal but there has been little in the way of updates on Mohamed Salah's situation

Liverpool have tied Jarell Quansah down to a new deal - but there is still no sign of a breakthrough in talks with talisman Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian forward, 32, is among a handful of key first-team stars who have now entered the final year of their current deal, leaving fans anxious.

Club captain Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also out of contract in the summer - and there is still no news on whether the influential trio will remain at Anfield beyond the current Premier League season.

There is better news when it comes to Quansah and Konate, though, with the former putting pen to paper on Monday evening following a breakthrough campaign last year.

Talks with Konate are at an earlier stage but there is an air of expectation that a similar outcome will come to be in the coming weeks. Liverpool have been keen to reward both players with new terms - and there should be further contract talks in the pipeline.

New head coach Arne Slot recently told fans that there was nothing to report in terms of progress on new contracts for Salah, Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk.

The trio have over 900 senior appearances for the Reds between them after playing key roles during Klopp's tenure. And while the club would like to keep them, fans are concerned given the trio will be free to speak with clubs from overseas in January.

Salah has been regularly linked with clubs from the Saudi Pro League over the past 12 months, while Alexander-Arnold is known to be a long-term target for Real Madrid. Van Dijk had also given little away in regards to his contract situation earlier in the summer.

When Slot was asked for an update on Salah's contract situation prior to Saturday's win over Crystal Palace, the Dutchman quipped: "Contracts?! (laughs) I was hoping in your last question that you didn't use the word 'contract' because I was saying 'Trent is doing like this and he is doing like this…'. It's the same boring answer as always.

"I could really understand if you ask me this once every two weeks but if you ask me this after two or three days again then you still get the same answer and people feel that I'm boring them! So, try it after the international break again!"
