Few anticipated Newcastle United would be serious top-four contenders this Premier League season, especially after a subdued transfer window. Yet, the Magpies have defied expectations and currently sit third as they prepare to face Fulham.

The ambitious Saudi-backed project seemed ready for takeoff after Eddie Howe secured a Champions League spot two seasons ago. However, balancing European competition and domestic duties proved challenging last term, with injuries hampering their progress. Consequently, Newcastle finished seventh, missing out on European football.

Ironically, this absence from European commitments might benefit them in the current Premier League campaign, as they now enjoy a less congested fixture schedule. Financial constraints due to profit and sustainability rules prevented a summer spending spree, but Howe still commands an impressive starting lineup that’s been gaining momentum.

Fulham will pose a significant challenge at Craven Cottage. Marco Silva's squad has been resilient in the league, remaining unbeaten since their narrow opening-day loss to Manchester United. Despite suffering a surprising EFL Cup exit on penalties to Championship side Preston midweek, the Cottagers are more than capable of handing Newcastle their first defeat of the season if they perform at their best.
