FA Cup hero forced to work day job hours before historic Huddersfield Town upset

by Oli Gamp · The MirrorTamworth's FA Cup hero Jas Singh was forced to work a shift at his building surveyor job hours before his non-league side completed a famous win over Huddersfield on Friday night.
Singh started in goal for the National League outfit as they secured an incredible 1-0 victory over the League One Terriers - who were ranked 57 places above their unfancied opponents.
The only goal of the game came after Tom Tanks' long throw-in was launched into the box and flew all the way into the net - as keeper Chris Maxwell could only prod the ball into his own goal.
Huddersfield had their chances and Singh had to be alert to thwart a number of efforts, including from Tom Orpenda as he used his legs brilliantly to keep him out and went on to secure a clean sheet in one of the club's most famous nights.
But speaking to Ashley Williams for BBC Sport before the game, Singh admitted he had to plug away at his workplace just hours ahead of kick-off, with the part-time player working as a building surveyor in addition to his duties for Tamworth.
He said: "I'm actually working on Friday! Yeah I've run out of holiday..." to which Williams replied: "I'd be speaking to the manager, that's unacceptable."
Singh went on to note that his manager did allow him to leave an hour early - allowing him some crucial preparation before the huge showdown.
Singh has been with Tamworth since 2018, having previously played a handful of other lower league clubs, including Shrewsbury, Kidderminster, Solihull Moors and Telford United.
His manager Andy Peaks was understandably ecstatic after the game, saying he felt "proud" and was only calm after the final whistle - adding that his main priority was not to be "embarrassed" on live TV.
"I am chilled now," he said. "During stoppage time you know something can happen so you're never content until it's finished. We managed the game really well. Brilliant. We felt that when we got the ball we had to keep it and not give it back straight away because they are good on the ball.
"We mixed it up well. We had to be strong down the spine and the spine was strong. I just wanted to be competitive and not be embarrassed on national television.
"But I'm so proud of all of them - we have such a strong spine to the team - I never want a team of individuals, I want a team."
