Joe Burrow was left reeling as the Cincinnati Bengals narrowly missed out on victory against the Baltimore Ravens.

In an AFC North classic on Sunday, the Ravens triumphed over the Bengals 41-38 in overtime, leaving the Bengals with a disappointing 1-4 record. At Paul Brown Stadium, Burrow put on a stellar performance, throwing for 392 yards and a career-high five touchdowns. He completed 30-of-39 passes, despite three sacks and one interception.

He connected with Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins for two touchdowns each, marking a significant day for the quarterback, but the ending was all too familiar.

After Lamar Jackson's costly fumble at the start of overtime, the Bengals opted for three consecutive run plays, aiming for a 53-yard field goal. However, Evan McPherson missed the attempt due to a fumbled snap, leading to outrage among Bengals fans who questioned why the ball wasn't given to Burrow in such a crucial moment.

The missed field goal handed possession back to the Ravens on their own 43, and they quickly capitalised. Derrick Henry broke through and sprinted downfield, setting up Justin Tucker's game-winning 24-yard field goal.

Despite Burrow's impressive performance, Jackson also shone brightly. He threw for 348 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for 50 yards. However, it was Henry who led the Ravens on the ground with 92 yards and a score.

The Bengals were desperately trying to avoid a 1-4 start, while the Ravens moved to 3-2 to keep up with the 3-1 Pittsburgh Steelers at the top of the AFC North. Cincinnati's poor start is particularly surprising, as the Bengals are usually a formidable team when Burrow is fit.

Cincinnati has the unique honour of being the only team to have defeated the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game in the last five seasons, beating Kansas City 27-24 to advance to Super Bowl LVI where they fell short against the Los Angeles Rams. A year later, Patrick Mahomes and his team got their revenge by defeating Burrow in the AFC Championship.

Last season, Burrow's wrist injury derailed the Bengals' season, even though the franchise had started slowly. They were gaining momentum when the quarterback was injured, so fans can still hold out hope that their season is far from over - especially with Burrow performing as well as he is.

Burrow's 1-4 Bengals will face off against the New York Giants in their next game on Sunday Night Football on Oct. 13.
