Anthony Gordon sends six-word message on new deal after Liverpool transfer promise

Anthony Gordon was linked with a transfer to Liverpool in the summer but now seems the winger is set to sign new terms with Newcastle United to extend his stay at St James' Park

Anthony Gordon has declared he is "really excited" to sign a new contract with Newcastle United - just months after reportedly having his sights set on a move to Liverpool.

The former Everton star has endured a slow start to the season with the Magpies - and could have been plying his trade elsewhere in 2024/25. The forward is said to have been offered to Liverpool in June as the club aimed to meet the Premier League 's Profit and Sustainability Rules.

It is said a proposed deal was worth £75million, with Joe Gomez heading in the opposite direction for £45m. While Liverpool were interested a deal did not come to fruition within the short time period available.

It was even claimed that Gordon had told England team-mates he was making the move, but now the 23-year-old appears set to extend his stay at St James' Park. Ahead of Newcastle's match against Manchester City, the ground displayed 'AG 10', in the latest hint news of an extension could soon arrive.

Asked about it on TNT Sports, Gordon said: "I don't know. I only heard about it yesterday, so I'm just as excited as you to be fair. That's the first time I've seen it."

"Yeah it's close, I'm really excited," he added about the prospect of a new contract. "But we'll focus on that when it comes. I'm really excited about [the game] and I want to get that out of the way first."

Gordon continued a positive start to 2024/25 with a goal against City to add to his effort against Bournemouth earlier in the term. Speaking in August Eddie Howe made clear he was happy with how the winger was looking in training despite speculation.

He said: “I’ve seen Anthony come back in a good place. Especially this past week, he had a really short training period before that first game. We put him in as he’s a difference maker, it takes the younger players less time to get up to speed but I think this week he has looked back to his best.

“I have been in the game too long to make those statements [on whether Gordon could join Liverpool]. What I will say is from my part and the club’s part we will do everything we can to keep our best players but I am not a fortune teller.”
