Harry Maguire has admitted he was stunned to be left out of England's latest squad by interim boss Lee Carsley.

Maguire was picked in Carsley's first squad and performed well in England's 2-0 Nations League win away to Republic of Ireland in Dublin last month. But Carsley called Maguire on the morning of Manchester United's 3-3 draw away to Porto in the Europa League to inform him he was not in his latest squad.

Maguire said the snub had come as a blow and admitted he was shocked at his omission, having played so well in his first outing under Carsley. “I played in his first game in charge and yes, I did really well,” said Maguire. “I did really well in Ireland. There's no hiding away from that.

“So, no, I was a little bit surprised, I must say. But obviously I back his decision and he's told me I'm part of the future, so we'll see what comes in November. I had a chat with the manager and he spoke about his reasons. He told me I'm a big part of the future and he just wants to see the other lads playing in this camp.

“He doesn't want to take me if I'm not going to start either game, which is fair enough. I'll go away, get some rest. Of course I'm disappointed. I want to play every game for England and it's something that I've done throughout the last seven years of my career.

“So I'm disappointed. But I know where he's coming from and I've got to make sure that I perform when I'm on the pitch and give him no option to leave me out.”

Ezri Konsa, Levi Colwill, John Stones and Marc Guehi are the central defenders included ahead of Maguire. Eberechi Eze and Jarrod Bowen have also been left out by Carsley for the upcoming matches against Greece and Finland.
