Erik ten Hag's future at Manchester United continues to hang in the balance as the Dutchman looks to fight on to keep his job. Despite a board meeting ending with keeping the former Ajax man at the helm, he continues to have a grey cloud over his future in Manchester.

The Premier League manager is the favourite for the sack out of the rest of his counterparts at 4/9 with Sky Bet while fellow underachievers Gary O'Neil and Russel Martin are behind him at 7/2 and 9/2 respectively. Despite bringing in some silverware in his first season, Ten Hag is struggling to make United serious contenders once again in the top tier of English football.

United currently sit 14th in the table and just five points above the relegation zone having only picked up two wins in their opening seven matches. In fact, it is the worst Premier League start in the club's history which was confirmed with a dull 0-0 draw against Aston Villa just before the international break.

The Red Devils currently have league matches between Brentford and West Ham coming up with former boss Jose Mourinho set to welcome his former employers in between at Fenerbahce with a round of 16 League Cup tie at home to Leicester City to finish off October. No doubt Mourinho will be looking to get a result against his former club which could well see Ten Hag's future at the club sealed if things do not go there way.

Who is the favourite to become the next Man United manager?

According to the bookies, the club will be looking internally for the next permanent Man United manager with former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy the favourite to take over at 6/4 with Sky Bet. The Dutchman is a recognised name amongst the Old Trafford faithful having joined back in 2001 scoring 150 goals in 219 appearances in all competitions over five seasons.

The former Netherlands international player knows how to win as well picking up a Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup medal while under Sir Alex Ferguson's guidance but his stint as PSV's manager too. In his only season, Van Nistelrooy picked up both the Johan Cruyff Shield and KNVB Cup before he made the shock decision to resign with just one game remaining in the Eredivisie season.

Other mentions include Thomas Tuchel at 2/1 and former England head coach Gareth Southgate as well. The former Chelsea winner guided the Blues to a Champions League trophy not that long ago while Southgate could appeal to the board with his attitude towards uniting the dressing room.
