Trent Alexander-Arnold is out of contract at the end of the season

Trent Alexander-Arnold offers update on Liverpool future as he outlines key factor

Trent Alexander-Arnold's Liverpool deal expires in June and Reds fans fear the England star may leave on a free transfer after 20 years at the club

Trent Alexander-Arnold has remained coy his future at Liverpool beyond the summer, claiming trophies will be a key factor in his contract talks.

Alexander-Arnold’s deal expires in June and fans are worried the Reds vice-captain may end his 20-year association with the club and leave on a free transfer. However the England defender knows he would undermine his negotiating position if he declared he wanted to stay at Liverpool beyond this season.

Alexander-Arnold, 25, insists his talks with the club will remain private and said silverware will be his motivating factor. “The most important thing is trophies, if I’m honest,” he said. “I want to win trophies. I’m a player who’s highly motivated by trophies and winning things and being elite.

“That’s probably the main factor of anything. If you’ve got a personality that is an elite athlete that wants to win and will do anything to win, then that’s what drives them. I’ve been at the club 20 years now. I’ve signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public and this one won’t be either.”

Alexander-Arnold has won everything at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp and admits Liverpool remain contenders for silverware under head coach Arne Slot. “Yeah, we were close to the title last season and we got a cup,” he said. “The quad was on for a while, I suppose.

“Signs are there this season. We’re looking really good, it’s still early days, but we need to have a lot of consistency and beat a lot of teams over the course of the season. Then you’ve got the other Cups and the Champions League. It’ll be difficult, but you know, we’re looking to win as many trophies as we can.”

Alexander-Arnold has repeatedly been linked with Real Madrid and joining up with England pal Jude Bellingham at the Bernabeu. He refused to be drawn on his future and said: “I want to be a Liverpool player this season is what I’ll say.”

The captaincy is another lure and Alexander-Arnold says he has always dreamed of skippering his boyhood club. However he says this is a decision for Slot and Virgil van Dijk is the current Reds skipper. “I want to captain this club, that’s a goal of mine,” he said. “Whether that happens is out of my hands, to be honest.”
