Jamie Carragher disagrees with furious Arsenal stars after Leandro Trossard red card

Arsenal were reduced to 10 men for the second time in three Premier League games after Leandro Trossard kicked the ball away in Sunday's clash with Manchester City at the Etihad

Leandro Trossard's red card against Manchester City for kicking the ball away was spot on, according to Jamie Carragher.

The Belgian had already been booked earlier in the feisty clash between the Premier League title rivals. And just minutes before half-time, he was handed a second caution for kicking the ball away - just weeks after Declan Rice had done the same.

Ex-Liverpool star Jamie Carragher was left furious with Trossard and his Arsenal team-mates - who argued against the decision and attempted to persuade referee Michael Oliver to change his mind. But Carragher claimed it was a clear sending off - and he told Sky Sports: "The position Arsenal find themselves in, what is Trossard doing?"

Mikel Arteta gave Trossard a consolatory hug on the way off the pitch but Carragher's punditry partner Gary Neville was not convinced.

He said: "Arteta has put his jumper over his head. I don't think he can complain. It's a foul. He barges Bernardo Silva and then he wellies the ball away. The reason we know he's heard the whistle is he half pulls away."

Trossard's red was almost identical to the one that saw Rice awarded his marching orders in the draw with Brighton at the Emirates. He had already been booked and then slightly nudged the ball away after a clash with Joel Veltman.

Speaking after that decision, Arsenal boss Arteta said: "I was amazed. Amazed, amazed, amazed because of how inconsistent decisions can be. In the first half, there are two incidents and nothing happens.

"Then, in a non-critical area, the ball hits Declan [on the back of his leg], he turns around, he doesn't see the player coming and he touches the ball.

"By law, he can make that call, but then by law he needs to make the next call, which is a red card so we play 10vs10. This is what amazed me. At this level it's amazing."

Trossard's red was just the latest in a long-line of incidents during a thrilling first-half at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Rodri and Kai Havertz were involved in a bizarre collision with the game just four seconds old.

Erling Haaland then gave City the lead before teammate Rodri had to be replaced having seemingly picked up a serious knee injury. City were then left even more upset as Riccardo Calafiori equalised with a stunning drive.

The hosts were furious after the goal was allowed despite Kyle Walker claiming he was not in position. Their anguish was then made even worse as Gabriel Magalhaes put Arteta's side ahead. But just moments before the break, Trossard was awarded his red, teeing up an equally brilliant second period.
