Jarrell Quansah says working with Arne Slot is a big reason behind his decision to sign a new Liverpool contract.

England Under-21 international Quansah has put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at Anfield. Quansah, 21, made his first-team breakthrough last season, making 33 appearances in all competitions and only agreed his last long-term contract back in May 2023.

But Liverpool were keen to reward his progress over the summer - while Premier League rivals Newcastle monitored his situation, with the Magpies keen to add him to any deal that took Anthony Gordon to Anfield when the clubs held talks over the ex-Everton man - after a debut season where he scored the club's final goal under Jurgen Klopp.

Quansah started on the opening day of this season too, but was unceremoniously hooked by Slot at half-time of the 2-0 win over Ipswich, leading to questions over the new boss and how he saw the young centre-back. Quansah has only featured twice under Slot this term, with Ibrahima Konate the No.1 pick alongside captain Virgil van Dijk.

But after signing his new deal, Quansah made clear his feelings on Slot's role in his decision.

“I couldn’t be happier at this minute," he told Liverpool's official website. “I think the way the new manager has come in, his coaching style has definitely been a massive part of that and I think it is the best club in the world for me to develop at and become a better player.

“I think the players around me, who I’m looking to work hard off and listen to, I think they’re the best in the position at the minute. So, like I said, there is probably no better place I could be.”

He added: “I just want to take each step as it comes, every training session as it comes.

“I just want to keep trying to get better on the training pitch really and as long as I stay tunnel vision to that… I just want to keep progressing, keep trying to learn, and keep trying to get better and better [by] trying to learn off all the senior players, and I’ve got a lot in my position so anything I can take from them I am trying to do day by day.

“I am hoping to obviously push as well, hopefully we’re breeding quite a good environment that we’re all challenging for places and as long as we’re doing that I think we’ll all become better players and ultimately become a better team.”

Quansah, included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional England squad for Euro 2024, joined Liverpool’s academy aged five and has progressed through the ranks.
